EMV Card & Transaction Facts

EMV Card & Transaction Facts

  • All EMV cards are embedded with a secure chip that contains information about the cardholder and Personal Access Number (PAN). These cards may support either contact (in which the consumer inserts the card in the terminal) or PIN pad as well as contactless (in which the consumer taps to pay).

  • EMV cards currently being issued in the United States will also have a magnetic stripe to enable use at businesses that have not yet migrated to EMV.

  • If an EMV card is swiped at an EMV terminal or PIN pad, the device will instruct the customer to insert the EMV card instead. This is a card brand requirement and not a DangeloSolutions rule.

  • Some EMV cards contain multiple payment choices. When one of these cards is inserted into the device, the customer will be prompted to select which payment choice to use, and also may be prompted to confrm the use of that payment choice.

  • Unlike magnetic stripe cards, which are swiped once, an EMV card must be inserted into an EMV terminal or PIN pad and remain there for the duration of the transaction. The device will instruct the customer when to insert and remove the card.

  • EMV cards have the capability to process information related to the payment and enforce rules set by the card issuer. These rules, which will vary between cards, may include requesting either a PIN or signature to complete the transaction.

  • Some EMV cards have the ability to verify the PIN (this is called ofine PIN), and the customer will be informed whether the PIN is correct or incorrect at the time of entry.
